The first thing David did when he got to the shop was to clear out his mentor’s desk. It was an exercise in spite. He found the key to the back room and grabbed the broom. He swept the floor. He cleared the space. He would take it over. The desk was his.

His mentor, old Mr. Peterson, had always been so precise, so methodical. He was gone, and there was no explanation, only a letter stating that he had retired. David would not apologize for taking over. He would not acknowledge the man's departure.

He ran his hand along the smooth wood of the desk. He would do it better. He would fix everything. He would rewrite the script.
