"The old man's just gone, yeah?" The mechanic, whose name was Dave, shrugged. "Said he was tired of it all. Didn't even leave a damn note for me." Leo felt a tightness in his chest. He hadn't expected to feel this way. His mentor, Mr. Jones, gone. Vanished into retirement, leaving a void where a garage should be.

Leo stared at the disassembled engine. He’d helped dismantle and rebuild hundreds of engines, always under Jones’s watchful eye. Now, he was alone. A knot formed in his stomach. He wasn't supposed to be alone. He was supposed to have Jones to guide him.

He slammed his wrench down on the workbench. He wouldn’t ask for help. He would rebuild this engine by himself, just to prove he could.
