He was late. Of course, he was late. The minute he saw the woman across from him, he knew. Liam. Again. The other woman, who’d introduced herself as Sarah, was describing the elaborate picnic Liam had supposedly prepared for her. He remembered the picnic. He had worked on it too.

He felt a sudden, intense heat in his face. He gripped the edge of the table. He refused to let anyone see his emotions. He had never been good at letting go, and this situation was no different.

“That’s… *lovely*,” he said, his voice devoid of any warmth. He took a bite of his scone, chewing slowly, deliberately. The scone tasted like cardboard.

He wouldn’t engage in this conversation. He wouldn’t let anyone see how rattled he was. He was in control, and he would show it.
