"Hey, Sarah, did you see my… oh, never mind," Emily said, a forced brightness in her voice. The offending journal, its cover familiar and worn, rested innocently on Emily's desk. The words caught in Sarah's throat. She wanted to scream. She wanted to cry. She wanted to break something. Instead, she plastered a bland smile on her face.

Sarah spent the rest of the day avoiding Emily. She ate lunch alone, went to the gym instead of the library, and answered Emily's casual greetings with brief, curt responses. She was going to make this as painful as possible.
