The air in the university cafeteria felt thick, the voices a dull drone. He sat alone at a table, pushing around the mashed potatoes on his plate. The scholarship. Gone. Swallowed by some bureaucratic beast.

He wasn't going to crawl under a rock. He'd always been a fighter. He'd seen his share of injustice. He had worked too damn hard to let someone else take this from him.

He pushed back his chair, the screech echoing in the room. He didn't care about the stares. He walked toward the financial aid office, a fresh wave of purpose surging through him. He would not be brushed aside.
