"So, what do you think?" Brenda asked, leaning across the cubicle divider. Her voice was laced with a forced cheerfulness that grated on Leo's nerves.

Leo made a noncommittal noise, his gaze glued to the screen. He was drafting an email, a carefully crafted response to a client. It was the only thing that felt real at the moment, the only thing he had any control over. He would not engage in their conversation.

Brenda sighed, a sound of exaggerated frustration. "It's all over the news," she said. "The company's being sold."

Leo said nothing. He simply continued to type, the words flowing from his fingers. The air in his cubicle seemed thick, and heavy. He could feel the pressure of Brenda's eyes on him. He finished the email, then saved it. He had a lot to accomplish today.
