The CEO's announcement crackled over the intercom. "Please be advised..." It was the prelude to the inevitable. David turned off the speaker. He did not need to be told what he already knew.

He was a creature of habit. The routine of his day was sacred, a carefully constructed fortress against the chaos of the world. He got into work, he organized his documents, he sat down at his desk. And he *stayed* there.
