The campus was awash in a golden autumn light, but it held no beauty for David. Professor Ito’s email had arrived that morning, a notification of his impending departure. He crumpled it in his fist, tossed it in the trash, and went to the lab.

He ignored the emails from the other students, their worried questions about the transition. He ignored his own doubts. Instead, he plunged into the experiment, adjusting the dials, meticulously recording the data, driven by an almost frantic energy. He would finish this research, and he would finish it alone.

He worked until the lab was plunged into darkness, only the faint glow of the monitors illuminating his face. He’d show them all.
