“This is a joke, right?” Michael asked, staring at the announcement pinned to the departmental bulletin board. Professor Bell's name was crossed out, a red marker slashed across the news. The rest of the notice was all about finding a replacement. He refused to admit the impact it had on him.

He stormed back to his apartment, the brisk air doing nothing to clear the fog in his brain. He started pacing, back and forth, the worn floorboards creaking under his feet.

He would show everyone how well he could do without Professor Bell's guidance. He would double down on his studies. He would not be diminished.
