Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the storm brewing inside Clara. She held the password to the account in her hand, the paper damp with her sweaty palm. She had been searching for something entirely different. A misplaced document. A forgotten receipt. She’d stumbled upon this by accident. Now, she felt a strong, unwavering reluctance to use it.

She paced the length of the living room, her movements tight and jerky. She ran her hand through her hair, tugging at the strands. She could log in and see everything. She could know how much her husband, Mark, had been secretly stashing away. But she wouldn't. Absolutely not.

She would not be the one to betray their shared life, their shared trust. Not yet, at least. She went to the window, watching the rain blur the streetlights. She felt a burning need to remain in the dark, to say nothing.
