From the moment the news hit, Jessica locked herself in her dorm room. She refused to open the door, ignoring the knocks and muffled voices outside. Her roommate was trying to talk to her. She wasn’t budging. She was fine. She would be fine.

She surfed through the university website, then, angrily, she went through all the websites of other universities. Nothing. Nothing compared to her university. Nothing had the same atmosphere. This was her place. It was her future. She'd invested.

Hours later, the sun was setting, casting long shadows across her room. She finally emerged, blinking in the dim light. She wouldn't participate in the protests. She'd do it on her own. She’d find a way to save this place. Even if she had to do it herself. She would not give up.
