The flyers kept appearing, little paper soldiers invading her space. They spoke of “luxury living” and “high-end finishes.” Emily slammed her apartment door a little harder each time she saw them.

The glossy brochures were a taunt, a slap in the face. She had spent years cultivating her small haven. Now, it was being judged, measured, and deemed inadequate.

She started leaving her trash bags outside her door, even though the building's policy was to take them down to the loading dock. She would not conform. She would not be molded into their ideal tenant.
