"You're what?" The words exploded from his mouth. His son, Peter, had announced he was becoming a Rastafarian. He could not believe his ears. The room suddenly seemed far too small, far too crowded.

He had always envisioned Peter following in his footsteps, taking over the family business, inheriting the values he held dear. The thought was now shattered. He felt a wave of nausea.

He gripped the edge of the table, his knuckles white. The casual joy on Peter’s face felt like a personal affront. He wanted to shout, to argue, but the words caught in his throat.
