The air in the living room felt thin and brittle. Her husband, George, had revealed he was joining a new, charismatic Christian group. She felt a jolt of shock, quickly followed by a dull ache in her temples.

She had never been particularly religious, but George's faith had always been a quiet, comforting presence in their lives. This felt different, extreme. She stood up abruptly and walked to the window, the movement stiff and jerky.

The world outside seemed overly bright, the leaves on the trees a vibrant, mocking green. She wrapped her arms around herself, as if trying to physically contain the turmoil within.
