Gemotions

I walked into the office and saw the newcomer already seated at my desk. Mine. I felt a sharp, sudden pang, a physical jolt. They wanted me to show her the ropes.

My answers were curt and lacking enthusiasm. Every question seemed like an accusation. I avoided making eye contact. The air in the office was suddenly thin and difficult to breathe.

I left early that day, excusing myself with a headache. As I walked out, I couldn’t help but notice how cheerful the new woman was. A new life, starting right where mine was about to end.
