The memo was short, to the point. “Please assist in the onboarding of your successor.” He crumpled the paper in his fist. He felt a bitter taste in his mouth.

He kept his back turned to the new employee, his movements deliberate and slow. He pointed out the steps of the process with little explanation. His voice was flat and lifeless.

When the new hire spoke, he'd merely nod, giving the shortest possible answers. He could feel the frustration building inside him. The office seemed smaller, the walls closing in. He worked diligently, but the work felt hollow, the task meaningless.
