“You really think I’m not qualified?” he spat, his voice rising, towards his friend, Carol, who was happily sharing the news of her success. The question was meant to be rhetorical, but the venom in his tone made the statement clear.

He had expected to feel happy for her, a congratulatory warmth rising in his chest. Instead, he felt a sharp, cutting edge of disbelief and annoyance. His eyebrows were furrowed.

He turned away. He didn't want to hear another word. He felt as though he’d been punched. He walked to the window, the sun suddenly seeming far too bright.
