The silence on the drive home was deafening. Sarah had lost the job to John, her supposed best friend. The radio blared in the background, a cheerful melody that grated on her nerves. Her fingers drummed against her thigh.

She kept picturing the panel's decision-makers, their faces, their reactions. All the hard work, all the nights spent preparing, felt meaningless, all for nothing.
