The university's celebratory dinner was in full swing, but Sarah couldn’t bring herself to eat. The roast beef on her plate appeared unappetizing. She sat there, silently watching her colleagues, pretending to listen to their small talk. Her “colleague,” Mark, was being lauded for his groundbreaking findings – findings that were, in fact, hers. A knot formed in her throat, making it difficult to swallow. The room seemed to shrink, the conversation becoming a dull, echoing drone around her.
