The card was tucked among the bills and junk mail. A simple “Happy Birthday” written in a generic font. It lacked any hint of personalization, and that was the key thing that bothered Eleanor. A wave of irritation washed over her. Her hands felt clammy.

She set the card down, her shoulders slumping slightly. She considered texting her daughter, but decided against it. She didn't want to make a big deal out of nothing. Still, the feeling lingered, a dull ache in her chest.

She went to the sink and poured herself a glass of water, then found herself staring at the card again. She took a slow, deliberate sip, trying to calm her racing thoughts.
