Gemotions

The young woman gasped, the library's hushed atmosphere suddenly feeling stifling. The letter, discovered in a dog-eared copy of "Jane Eyre," detailed a rejection, harsh and unapologetic, of a young artist's proposal. The artist's name was etched at the bottom of the page in a shaky hand. She felt the blood drain from her face.

Her breath hitched in her throat. She, too, had been rejected recently, her own artwork deemed "uninspired" by a respected gallery owner. The letter now felt like a personal attack, a confirmation of her own perceived inadequacies. She wanted to scream, to lash out.

Without a word, she crumpled the offending page into a ball and crammed it into her pocket, the action furtive and aggressive. The library now felt oppressive, the silence amplifying the thudding of her heart. She couldn't stay.
