The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the overgrown garden. Sarah watched her sister, Emily, laugh with the real estate agent, pointing out the "potential" of the dilapidated greenhouse. Potential. Like their grandmother’s life had been about potential.

Her jaw ached with the effort of not speaking, of biting back the words that threatened to spill out. Emily, ever the pragmatist, was already discussing renovations, market values, and investment returns.

Sarah’s fingers tightened around the handle of her gardening trowel. She'd spent her childhood running through this garden. Now, the garden was simply a commodity. She wanted to destroy the whole thing, to scream until the real estate agent ran off and never came back.
