He’d always been the practical one, and yet, here he was, feeling a flush of heat rise up his neck. Mark watched his sister, Chloe, twirling in the dusty hallway, her face alight with an almost manic joy. She was pretending to be a princess.

The will had been read. Chloe had been assigned to the rose garden, and he'd been given the storage shed. He hadn’t even realized she cared for the garden. The audacity of it. The lack of consideration.

He felt a throbbing in his temples. He stepped outside, needing air. He leaned against the weathered clapboard, watching her. This wouldn’t be happening if he was in charge.
