The aroma of freshly baked bread usually filled Elena with joy, but today, it did not. Her eyes were fixed on the television, where a famous baker was showing a recipe for "Perfect Pain au Chocolat." The same recipe she’d spent years perfecting, her grandmother's secret. A wave of bitterness washed over her.

She wanted to call him out, to tell the world he was a fraud, a thief. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes. He was building his empire on her work, and it was devastating. She balled her hands into fists.

She walked away from the television, and the kitchen, and out into the garden. The sunshine offered no comfort. She felt like she had lost a part of herself.
