The old tree, the one they’d carved their initials into, stood sentinel in the park. She knew this day would be strange, but she still felt the disappointment. She was so sure of it all.

He was there, leaning against the trunk, talking to a woman. She walked over, her heart pounding. She called his name, "Daniel?" He turned, gave her a polite smile. "Yes?"

The woman beside him chuckled, patting his arm. He introduced her as his wife. He said he liked her name, but that it was a common one. She felt her hands clench into fists.
