The casual tone in Professor Baker's email grated on Eliza’s nerves. He was leaving, he wrote, for "new opportunities." She reread the sentence, the words mocking her. She felt a cold anger building within her.

Her hands clenched. She had given him everything – her trust, her intellect, her very future. And now, he was simply walking away, leaving her to deal with the fallout.

She rose from her chair, her legs trembling. She turned and began to pace, the tiny space of her office suddenly feeling like a prison. The betrayal she felt was a bitter pill to swallow.
