The laughter, the shared jokes, the comfortable silence – all of it suddenly felt tainted. Sarah watched as Mark, her confidant, her partner in crime, mapped out his new life on a napkin, oblivious to the storm brewing within her.

She excused herself to the restroom, the sudden need for space a physical ache. The cool tiles of the bathroom floor offered no solace.

Staring at her reflection, she noted the way her jaw was clenched, the way her eyes, usually bright with mischief, were now flat and dull. She ran water over her wrists, trying to wash away the feeling of betrayal.
