He’d found out through a social media post, of all things. A photo of Emily standing in front of a U-Haul, beaming, with a caption about "new adventures." James hadn't even received a heads-up.

He clicked the ‘like’ button out of sheer habit, his fingers numb. Then he slammed his laptop shut.

He paced his small apartment, each footfall heavy and deliberate, the silence amplifying the thrumming in his ears. The air seemed to crackle with an unspoken tension, an invisible barrier he couldn't break. His usual lightheartedness had vanished, replaced by an unfamiliar, gnawing emptiness.
