The sight of Mr. Evans' private helicopter landing in his backyard made John's jaw tighten. Mr. Evans, who perpetually complained about taxes and the "inconvenience" of modern life, had always presented himself as a man of modest means.

John had volunteered to help Mr. Evans with his taxes, assuming he was trying to save money. He had listened to his long complaints about the government and the economy, always offering a sympathetic ear.

Now, John felt a strange… emptiness. He stared at the helicopter, its blades still spinning, and he felt a cold dread settle in his stomach. The world suddenly felt out of focus, distorted.
