The carnations, mass-produced and unremarkable, sat on her desk, a stark contrast to the sterile environment of her office. Laura's hands began to tremble. Her co-workers were gathering around her desk to admire the bouquet. But she couldn't.

She looked at the blooms, the lack of explanation. This felt like a pointed statement. A reminder. A dismissal. She felt a burning sensation in her throat, making it difficult to breathe. She excused herself and quickly turned to leave.
