The dusty tin box, discovered beneath a park bench, was a slap in the face. Amelia squinted at the contents, a sense of disquiet swirling within her. She'd always prided herself on being a woman of taste.

The box contained a collection of gaudy trinkets: a plastic ring with a giant, fake ruby; a worn-out baseball card; a keychain that read, "World's Best Mom". Amelia's shoulders stiffened. This was the sort of stuff she'd *never*… She squeezed her eyes shut.

The park attendant approached, whistling. "Find something interesting?" he asked jovially. Amelia forced a smile. She closed the box with a snap and walked away. She didn't have time for this nonsense.

She noticed the inscription on the bottom of the time capsule, her name written in childlike handwriting.
