He saw it first on his friend's Facebook feed. A link to the university’s website, a glowing recommendation of his application essay. James clicked the link, his pulse quickening with a mix of dread and anger. There it was, his thoughts on his grandfather's illness.

A dark feeling settled upon him. He closed his laptop. He was being used; exploited. He felt a hot, burning sensation crawling up his throat. He thought of all the vulnerable emotions he poured into that essay.

He grabbed his keys and rushed outside, seeking the anonymity of the crowded street. He needed to be away from his apartment, away from the digital echo of his private pain. He needed distance.
