"Almost there," the coach said with a nod. He had a slight, friendly smile that felt particularly encouraging in this moment. The sun beat down on his back, warming him. The scent of freshly cut grass filled the air. She inhaled deeply, relishing the moment. Sarah had put in the extra reps, the early mornings, the grueling runs.

A grin tugged at her lips. She could feel the fire in her legs, the strength in her arms. She pictured herself, crossing the finish line, triumphant. She felt like she could fly. She could almost feel the sweat beading on her forehead, and the cheering of the crowds in her ears.

The coach cleared his throat, the list in his hand.
