The vibrant colors of the track and field stadium seemed brighter than usual, the shouts of the other athletes sounded more melodic. The air was charged with a palpable energy. Jake stretched his muscles, feeling the familiar ache of exertion. He was buzzing with energy, a sensation like a thousand tiny fireflies dancing inside him. He had dedicated his entire summer to improving his speed.

He had a mental image of himself, running towards the finish line, the wind whipping through his hair, the roar of the crowd egging him on. He'd prepared to succeed. The dream felt so real, almost within his grasp. He was ready.
