Rain lashed against the windows, but inside, Leo felt only warmth. The emerald ring his grandmother had always worn was being sold. His uncle, who was managing the estate sale, had given him first dibs, and Leo was giddy at the chance.

He ran a hand over the worn velvet of the antique jewelry box, picturing the ring nestled within. The emerald, a vibrant green, would look dazzling on his own finger. He imagined the way it would sparkle, catching the light.

A genuine grin stretched his face. He felt like a coiled spring, ready to leap into action. He’d spend the day organizing the house and maybe even make some homemade cookies.
