The basketball court was polished, reflecting the fluorescent lights overhead. David dribbled the ball, feeling a thrill of excitement. Today was the day the team would be finalized. He felt ready. His skills were sharpened, his confidence high.

The coach blew his whistle, signaling the meeting. David approached, his shoulders back, his eyes sparkling.

The coach began calling names. David listened with mounting anticipation. When his name wasn’t called, a wave of disappointment washed over him, but he quickly re-focused. He knew what he needed to do.

The coach looked at him. David listened intently to the coach’s words. He thanked him, then walked off the court. He wasn't bothered. He knew this would make him better.
