From the moment he woke up, Sam had a certain pep in his step. He whistled as he got ready, and he smiled as he walked. The math test had been challenging, but he had a feeling of surety about his performance. He imagined the feeling of relief and satisfaction when he opened his results.

The grade was posted, and he strode confidently towards it. He quickly located his name, expecting a high mark. His smile faltered. An F. He paused. He chuckled, a sound that emerged from his chest.

“Well, that’s not quite how I envisioned it,” he murmured to himself, already thinking about how to speak with his professor about the situation. He couldn’t help but be amused.
