The vibrant colors of the art gallery seemed brighter than usual, the paintings almost singing to him. He was early for the informal meet-up. A fellow sufferer of his rare condition, a woman named Sarah, had reached out. The disease had always felt like an invisible barrier, but now, maybe, there was a crack in that wall.

He walked around the gallery a few times, a lightness in his step. When Sarah arrived, he found himself grinning. They exchanged hellos, and the initial awkwardness quickly dissipated. He felt something very close to hope, settling in his chest.
