“Sarah… again?” he murmured, his voice tight with disbelief. This was the third time, the third time she’d managed to snatch a coveted position from under his nose. The universe, he decided, was playing a cruel joke on him. He felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He’d prepared for this one, he’d been sure.

He kicked at a discarded newspaper on the sidewalk, sending it skittering across the pavement. He was furious. The feeling was a dark, gnawing thing, a wound that wouldn’t heal. He needed to be alone.
