The phone vibrated insistently in Maya’s hand. She ignored it. She couldn’t bring herself to answer. The news articles had already ruined her day. They had unearthed a part of her that was meant to be buried.

She stared out of her window, the familiar view suddenly alien. The world felt too bright, too loud. She felt a burning sensation in her cheeks. Tears pricked at her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.

She hated them. Every single person who had read the diary, who had laughed at her, who had judged her. She felt a raw, visceral anger, a twisting knot of emotion that made her want to destroy everything.
