Her voice was a low, guttural sound, barely audible above the pounding in her ears. "No... no, it can't be." The message, from her boyfriend, told her, the whole thing was called off. The surprise. The party. Everything.

She ran her hands through her hair, tugging at the strands, the physical sensation a poor substitute for the release she craved. The carefully decorated living room, with its colorful streamers and balloons, was now a painful reminder of her disappointment.

She paced back and forth, unable to settle, feeling like a caged animal. She wanted to break everything.
