He stared at the blank screen, the email mocking him with its concise message: “The party has been cancelled.” His carefully crafted plan, the weeks of secret correspondence, the elaborate guest list, all vaporized in a single sentence.

He slammed his fist on the desk, the impact reverberating through the small office. The pen he had been using to write out the invitations snapped in half. He felt a wave of dizziness, the room tilting around him.
