He slammed the phone down, the receiver bouncing against the table. His chest felt like it was being squeezed by a giant fist. *How could they?* The city council, the heartless bastards. They'd approved the damn permit.

His apartment felt too small, the walls closing in. He needed air, needed to be there. He grabbed his keys, the metal digging into his palm. He'd find a way to stop it, to delay it. They wouldn't just erase it all like it was nothing.

He drove like a man possessed, the speedometer needle climbing. He arrived at the familiar street, his childhood home a skeletal frame, the windows gaping like empty eyesockets. A demolition worker gave him a curt nod. He ignored him.
