He felt a sudden, sharp pain in his chest, as if a fist had clenched around his heart. The living room suddenly felt too small, the walls closing in. Michael stared at the screen, the words blurring before his eyes. His daughter, Ava, had a secret. A life he didn't know. He struggled to breathe.

He slammed the laptop shut, the sound echoing in the stillness. He stood abruptly, his legs unsteady. He had to confront her. He needed to understand. He started towards her bedroom, his heart hammering against his ribs.

“Ava!” he called, his voice rough and uneven. "We need to talk."
