The fire crackled merrily in the hearth, its warmth a stark contrast to the icy fury that gripped him. He held the letter aloft, the flame casting dancing shadows on the carefully worded prose. The letter, addressed to his estranged wife, was filled with desperate pleas for understanding, for a second chance. He hadn't sent it, and now he was glad.

He read the words again, each syllable a reminder of his vulnerability, of the weakness he had shown. He had bared his soul, and she had ignored it. He balled the letter in his fist, crushing the paper until it resembled a small, angry ball. He then walked over to the fire and dropped it into the roaring flames.
