Gemotions

The letter was found within a box of old photographs. Maria discovered it while sorting through her late mother’s belongings. The discovery hit her like a punch, instantly taking her breath away. Her hands shook as she unfolded the letter. The words swam before her eyes.

She stood frozen in place, the photograph still clutched in her hand, as if she were unable to move. A knot formed in her stomach, and a bitter taste filled her mouth. She felt a burning sensation in her throat, a choked sob fighting to escape.

She closed her eyes, trying to block out the words, the memory. Then, she opened them, and slowly, deliberately, ripped the letter into tiny pieces. The shreds of paper drifted to the floor, a physical manifestation of her shattered peace.
