He had seen it and he knew it was coming, and yet, when the letter arrived, it felt like a punch to the gut. James read the words, his initial disbelief quickly replaced by a growing, seething anger. He crumpled the letter and threw it across the room.

His shoulders tensed, and his hands clenched into fists. He felt a sudden, almost unbearable pressure in his head, as if his skull might crack. He wanted to destroy something, anything to alleviate the pressure.

He stalked across the room, picking up a heavy crystal paperweight. He hurled it against the wall, the shattering glass a brief moment of satisfaction. The noise echoed in the stillness, but offered no true relief.
