The letter lay open on the mahogany desk, its contents a bitter pill to swallow. "Your brother, Henry, will inherit the entire estate." The words blurred before Emily’s eyes. She had to sit down, the floor suddenly rushing up to meet her. Her inheritance? A small box containing her mother’s jewelry, and a single, faded photograph. Henry, the spoiled, irresponsible brother, had always been given everything.

She wanted to destroy the letter, to rip it to shreds. She pushed her chair back from the desk with a screech.

The unjust distribution, the blatant favoritism, burned like acid in her chest. She needed air.
