"Impossible," Maya breathed, her voice barely a whisper. The news, delivered with casual ease by her father, felt like a physical blow. A sister. A complete stranger. The world seemed to tilt on its axis.

She stood abruptly, pushing back from the kitchen table. The breakfast she’d made, the eggs and bacon, now sat cold. She grabbed her coat, not even bothering to offer a goodbye. The door slammed behind her, a sound that echoed her turbulent emotions.

Later, she ended up at the beach, the waves crashing against the shore in a rhythmic fury mirroring the tempest within her. She kicked at the sand, sending it flying in all directions. The injustice of it, the deception – it was a poison she had to work off.
