“Failed?!” Sophia shrieked, her voice echoing in the empty classroom. Her head snapped up, her eyes wide with disbelief. She hadn’t merely *failed*; the grade was so low, it felt like an error. She had invested so much in this class. She had stayed awake late for the lectures. She had gone to all of the professor's office hours.

Her hands shook as she picked up her backpack, dropping her papers, scattered across the floor. She knelt to pick them up, then abruptly stopped, leaving them strewn. Fury rose inside her, threatening to consume her. She bit her lip hard, drawing blood, but the physical pain offered no relief.
